MEDICAL STUDENT/RESIDENT HANDBOOK

HISTORY

Iliuliuk Family and Health Services, Inc (IFHS), is a non-profit organization, incorporated on February 14, 1972.  IFHS evolved out of a long-standing institution in Unalaska, the United Methodist Church, which established a mission and orphanage in Unalaska in the 1890’s.  The clinic evolved and is now a federally funded Community Health Center.

GOAL OF ROTATION

To provide high quality healthcare tailored to meet the changing needs of our culturally diverse community and to provide high quality educational experiences for our students and residents.

REQUIREMENTS

IFHS needs a memorandum of agreement from your institution allowing us to temporarily take over education.  We also need proof of malpractice insurance coverage.

CLINIC

Clinic hours are M-F 8:30-6 and Saturdays 8:30-5 during the fishing/crabbing seasons and 9-1 during the off-season.  Call is taking the weekends and weeknights starting at 4:30pm.  Students/residents typically work weekdays and ask the on call provider to contact them for interesting cases.  If your assigned preceptor is on call, you should take call with them.  Dr David Baines is the coordinator  of students/resident rotations, but other providers may set up rotations with themselves.  We provide routine outpatient care and we provide a lot of urgent care including occupational health and trauma. We try to get you time with the school nurse and in the Native Clinic, Aleutian Pribilof Island Association (APIA), housed in the floor above us.

Dress code is casual but must be clean and business-like in appearance. No clothes with holes or bare midriffs or feet.  Jeans are OK if clean and intact.  You will have access to a washer and dryer.

Students and residents are strongly encouraged to write an article on a pertinent health topic for the local paper, The Dutch Harbor Fisherman.

Guardian Flight is an air ambulance stationed here and we sometimes can get you a ride on one of their medevacs.

Generally we can provide housing and a vehicle for you. You must pay for the gas and food.

The internet is available on computers at work and some areas in the community have WiFi you can tap into with your laptop.

ACTIVITIES

There are many activities available on your time off.  Hiking requires a permit from the Ounalashka Native Corporation.  Fishing requires an Alaska Fishing License.  You need waterproof boots and clothing and warm clothing, including long underwear, regardless of the time of the year.  Down coats are not recommended. Kayaks are available to rent but we recommend only experienced kayakers do this activity.  Bring lots of film or storage for your digital cameras.  Maps, info on fishing charters and tours can be obtained from the Chamber of Commerce in the Burma Road Chapel Building or the Grand Aleutian Hotel lobby.  The Museum of the Aleutians has topo maps and the Ounalashka Corporation has hiking maps.

There are two museums here, the World War II Museum and the Museum of the Aleutians.  We recommend them both.

The Unalaska Parks, Culture, & Recreation Dept (PCR) has a library and a rec center with cardio, gym, handball, walking track and pool.

Souvenirs can be obtained at the Ounalashka Corporation, the gift shop in the Grand Aleutian hotel, the two museums, the two grocery stores, and at the Alaska Ship Supply store.

We will try and get your tours on fishing boats and in the processing plants as well as outings on boats.  This community has many planned activities that you can get involved in and we will make every effort to make this a fun as well as educational experience.
