Gregory Walter, NP
Greg Walter comes to IFHS from Kodiak, where he and his family lived for four years. When asked what inspired him to go into healthcare, Greg mentioned his previous role as a social worker. “I saw in that work how there was a need for medical providers who can listen to patients and work together with them on achieving the goals that matter to the patients.” He went on to graduate from Yale as a nurse practitioner in 2018 with a specialty in diabetes management.
Today, seeing patients excited about achieving a health goal, such as getting off a medication for diabetes or high blood pressure, is his inspiration. “I’ve seen so many people improve their lives by making healthy changes, and it’s exciting and gratifying every time.”

Thomas Peterson, FNP
Although he calls Texas home, working in Alaska has always been on Thomas’ bucket list. Working at IFHS has allowed him to check that one off! Some of the things he loves about Unalaska are how friendly everyone is, meeting many different people, and the beauty of the location.
The desire to serve in rural healthcare led Thomas to earn his BSN from the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston. He then went on to earn his MSN and DPN from Rocky Mountain University of Healthcare Professionals.

Christy Fassbender, DNP
Interim Medical Director
Christy joins IFHS from Mobile, Alabama. In fact, coming to Unalaska is the first time she’s lived out of the state of Alabama! “I’ve always wanted to be in medicine,” Christy shared. “As a child, I was adamant I would go to Harvard and become a heart surgeon. This did not happen because . . . well life. The first time I was able to work in an Emergency Room (ER) as a student aid, I knew that was my calling.”
Christy attended a small community college then transferred to a larger university. She obtained her Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) in 2005. Most of her career was spent in the ER with extra shifts in other departments such as the burn unit, surgical/trauma unit, and neo-natal intensive care. A physician that she was particularly close to encouraged her to go to med school. She graduated in May 2017 with her Master's of Science in Nursing (MSN) in Family Nurse Practice and Adult- Gerontology Acute Care Nurse practice. Because she is a self-proclaimed “over-achiever,” Christy went on to earn her Doctorate of Nursing Practice (DNP) while continuing to work full-time as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the ER.
